The day dawned bright and early for the Metis team on Thursday 5th September as we boarded our 7am flight for part 1 of our annual London Lawn Bowls Extravaganza!
Despite the disappointment that Stephen was not able to join us from the States, we were grateful that he must have sent some Californian vibes our way as we enjoyed a beautiful day of warm sunshine, sizzling competition and, of course, plenty of cold drinks!
After a series of tense play-offs amongst the various teams, including two from Mazars (who became affectionately known as Mazars ‘Winners’ and Mazars ‘Losers’), we all looked on in anticipation as the Mazars Winners took on Aurelius Finance in the final. It was a close, nail-biting finish, but in the end it was Aurelius who triumphantly claimed the champions’ trophy, the Mazars Winners who lost the final but won the runners-up trophy and the Mazars Losers who did indeed lose all their matches but won the much-coveted wooden spoon prize!
Congratulations Martyn, James and John of the Aurelius team – we hear you enjoyed showing off your prize in the pub that evening, and rightly so!
Friday dawned rather less bright as the grey clouds rolled in and we were treated to a short shower whilst setting up for the second day of our extravaganza.
Having come down from Glasgow, we didn’t think too much of this and had come prepared with ponchos for all and arranged for a gazebo on the green! Thankfully this was the only rain of the day, however, and a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon was spent with the folks who were determined to not let a bit of cloud dull their enthusiasm for bowls, beers and brilliant conversation.
After a round robin of play-offs which was interrupted only for refreshments and an impromptu pitch invasion from an over-enthusiastic Golden Retriever named Muji, it was time for the final between BM Advisory (ably assisted by Xixi of Beechbrook and Allister of Opus) and FCFM. Despite a valiant effort, it was BM who rolled the winning bowl and were able to claim the trophy of champions! Congratulations must also go to the EuroVals boys who were determined not to go home empty handed and so were delighted to be presented with the wooden spoon in recognition of some fantastically shoddy bowling!
Well done Andy, Nick, Xixi and Allister on your fantastic win!
