Metis Partners is an intellectual property (“IP”) firm, acknowledged as being the UK market leader in IP Valuation and IP Sale. Established in 2003, we have grown to become a young dynamic team of specialists working from offices in Glasgow and San Diego.

What we do

We identify, value and sell IP for a range of clients, big and small, private and PLC, across a variety of sectors. We have a unique approach called Metisology® which helps us identify the key IP assets in any business. Our valuation team is focused on analysing a target business, its key resources and the contribution that IP assets make to its competitive advantage.

We get a unique, inside view of what make companies tick – both the successful companies and those that are failing, and why. We also help support other professionals, advising on and facilitating business turnarounds using the value of IP assets to attract rescue funding.

We operate across three IP disciplines: Valuation, Advisory and Corporate Recovery and Restructuring. A Manager/Senior Manager heads up each of the three teams.

What the role involves

We are currently recruiting for a Manager for IP Valuation.

Working directly with the Founder and the Management Team, the role will involve daily contact with accountants, lawyers, M&A professionals and corporates. The right candidate will become fully versed in our IP valuation services, be confident discussing these via phone, content-led emails, meetings and events. They will manage IP Valuation assignments, including our significant growth with US clients, and allocate and monitor team workload.

Here are some of the activities our IP Valuation team has been involved in over the last 6 months…

  • Valued the brand and related IP assets of a household name in the UK food industry on behalf of a lender to facilitate a re-finance
  • Valued and reported on the extensive patent portfolio and associated cutting-edge technology for a US-based electric car manufacturer to support future investment
  • Valued the brand for a lender to a US-wide retail outlet looking to re-finance
  • Valued the IP portfolio of an innovative cyber-security business, including patents, software and algorithms to support help secure growth finance
  • Identified and valued the individual critical IP assets for two UK giants of the UK food & beverage sector to meet post M&A reporting requirements
  • Worked with the Corporate Recovery team to deliver IP Valuation Opinions on the value of IP assets in distressed UK businesses
  • Estimated the expected value of a US brand operating in the UK and provided an expert witness report to support an IP litigation
  • Valued a master licence agreement for a health and fitness franchising business
  • Delivered IP-specific training to the CRR teams including Ernst & Young, KPMG and FRP
  • Attended and networked with key contacts at Metis marketing events, including Metis Lawn Bowls events in Glasgow & London, and our annual Metis Burns Suppers in London and New York
  • Reached the quarter finals of the Glasgow Business Five-a-side Football Tournament

Key responsibilities of the IP Valuation Manager include:

  • Managing client engagements, including managing staff to deliver all IP Valuation assignments, typically within an agreed and pressurised timeframe
  • Being the primary Metis contact for both clients and professional advisors; liaising with them to determine scope, delivery, timetable and fees for IP Valuations
  • Preparing and/or reviewing client proposals, IP Valuation Reports and IP Valuation-related marketing content
  • Conducting IP discovery calls with clients to gather information on their business operations and key IP assets
  • Actively contributing to business development activities and attending both Metis & external events
  • Managing our IP Valuation Analysts:
    • Briefing them on client assignments and targets
    • Agreeing the valuation methodology and approach for each assignment
    • Reviewing their IP, corporate and sector research, and all IP Valuations
    • Conducting staff appraisals and participating in both staff recruitment and training

Skills required to perform this role include

  • Excellent written & oral communication skills
  • Commercial awareness and professional discretion as jobs are often confidential or commercially sensitive
  • Resilience and ability to work within a dynamic business environment while recognising the rigour required in the delivery of professional services often to tight timescales
  • A sound understanding of IP, accounting financial statements, financial modelling and valuation techniques

Experience and knowledge of IP assets is preferable but not required. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience of working in the delivery of professional services.
